Testing, Certification and Fault finding Information.

We provide on this page some information regarding the requirement to maintain electrical installations in a safe condition and ways that this can be demonstrated, as well as some basic fault finding information designed to assist you if you have a fault.

There are several types of records that can be produced for an electrical installation to demonstrate that the electrical installation is being maintained in a safe condition as follows,

Completion Certificate

This should be provided for new electrical installation work. Usually this would be where there has been a new circuit installed upon an existing installation, an installation has been substantially altered or for a completely new electrical installation.

Minor Works Certificate

This is usually provided where electrical instalation work has been carried out on an existing  circuit, such as the addition of an electrical outlet or the replacement of an electrical accessory such as a light or socket outlet.

Periodic Test and Inspection Report

This is usually provided when electrical installations are tested and inspected at interim periods during the life cycle of an electrical installation. The results would usually be compated with those of any original Completion Certificates and Minor Works Certificates such that areas of deterioration can be identified.
These interim inspections would usually be carried out at intervals as recommended by the original designer of the installation as well as following changes of occupier or any change to the use of a property. Some insurance companys will also insist on a periodic test and inspection prior to insuring a new business client.
Landlords renting domestic premises to tennants should ensure the safety of the electrical installations installed in their properties and again the periodic test and inspection is designed to help demonstrate the safety of the installation.

Visual Inspection

This type of inspection can be a useful guide to the age and  condition of an installation as long as it is carried out by a skilled electrical operative with adequate experience. A written report should provided detailing any recomendations for additional testing and inspection or any recomended remedial actions.

Fault Finding

Usually faults in electrical installations are recognised by the user when something electrical stops working. Usually this is due to a protective device of some sort having ruptured or tripped out. Protective devices can be enclosed cartridge fuses, semi enclosed rewireable fuses, circuit breakers, miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices (RCD's) or RCBO's (combined RCD and Overcurrent Device).

The first step is to identify if a protective device has operated.

Then acertain what that devices protects. eg a lighting circuit or power circuit.

Next unplug any appliances from sockets or switch off any light switches on the affected circuit.

Then reset the protective device.

If the device immediatly disconnects again then call a profesional for assistance as there is likely to be a circuit fault.

If the device resets satisfactorily then plug appliances back in or switch lights on one at a time till the circuit trips again. Note which appliance or light caused the tripping, unplug or disconnect it and reset the protective device again.

You have identified the faulting equipment or appliance by a process of elimination and should then seek assistance to repair or replace the faulty appliance or light.

The above fault finding process is written in simplistic terms but the principle can be applied to most electrical circuits by following the logic.

Here is a flow chart that you could print out and place near your fusebox or consumer unit to assist with fault finding.
